Year 5 Turnaround

Miss Carver's class set off for Pyke House in the morning, in the company of Mrs Sweatman, who spent the day in Battle. Mr Lowe's class returned to school at 5pm and gathered their bags, which had been sent back ahead of them.
Children in Year 6 have begun auditioning for parts in the summer production. Miss Porter conducted singing auditions today. The acting auditions will conclude on Friday.

Bowled Out

Photos were taken of the four Walking Bus groups on their arrival at school this morning.
The cricket team suffered one of its worst-ever defeats when it played Tollgate (Eastbourne), losing the game by 66 runs. Tollgate batted sensibly, losing only 2 wickets and scoring 135 runs. They then bowled and fielded superbly, taking a total of 12 wickets, thus reducing Hawkes Farm's score to 69.

Resuscitation

Miss Carver's Year 5 class left for Pyke House, accompanied by Miss Carver and Mr Lowe, whose own class will travel out to join him on Wednesday.
Mark Beaumont, from Infacom, visited the school to discuss projector/Smartboard packages with Mrs Cobb and Mr Thorn.
The teaching staff were given their annual update on resuscitation procedures by Mr Russell, prior to commencement of use of the swimming pool after half-term.
Mr Harman spent the afternoon carrying out the latest SIMS upgrade.

Newspaper Name

Mr Thorn met with the newspaper group and they decided that there should be a deciding vote between the two leading names on the shortlist: Hawkes Herald and Hawk-a-Mania. The group will organise the vote on Monday.

Year 6 children returned from a highly successful 4-day visit to France half-an-hour early, at 4.30pm.

Nursery Visit

Mrs Pearce, Year 6 TA, was out of school during the morning attending a session of her STAC (Special Teacher Assistant Certificate) course. Mrs Goffredi, from Hailsham Community College, began a series of weekly transition meetings with a small group of Y6 children. Mrs Cobb met with two representatives of the Emmanuel Nursery at lunchtime.

Cricket Defeat

In the first of a best-of-three friendly series against Grovelands, the Hawkes Farm cricket team lost the opening game by 12 runs.
Earlier in the day Mr Thorn and Mr Harman, ICT technician, attended a half-day seminar on the latest upgrades to the SIMS administration modules.

Off To France

Families waved Y6 children off at 7am at the start of their 4-day visit to France. The school field was mown, but is as yet unmarked for games and athletics.

Tests Complete

Year 6 completed their final KS2 test paper (Mathematics - calculator allowed) in the morning. Miss Jones attended a Mentor training day at Brighton University. The weather has turned summery again at last. KS2 used the field at mid-morning break, but the grass is very long and the ground still damp so children were confined to the playground at lunchtime.

Year 2 Road Safety

A meeting was held in the staffroom at 9am to set up a series of Road Safety sessions with Year 2, similar to the scheme undertaken with Year 1 last term.

Meetings

Mr Thorn held a meeting with all TA's at 11.30 to update them on information gathered from the briefing he attended earlier in the week on the subject of Higher Level Teaching Assistant status.
Two Governors meetings were held after school. The Finance Committee met at 5pm, followed by a full meeting of Governors at 6pm.

ICT Budget

Mr Thorn and Mr Seymour met with Mrs Cobb to discuss this year's ICT budget (Mr Harman, the technician, was absent due to sickness). It was decided that the greater part of the budget this year should be allocated to projectors and/or interactive whiteboards. Mr Seymour will visit Stone Cross school tomorrow afternoon to view and discuss a possible board/projector/installation package.

KS2 Test Audit

The Key Stage 2 tests began today, with both Science papers. Mrs Connie Hughes visited to carry out an audit of the school's testing procedures.
After school, Mr Thorn attended a meeting about Higher Level Teaching Assistant Status at Wellshurst Golf Club.

Summer On Hold

The summer is still on hold, with intermittent heavy showers and cool temperatures. The field is very wet, with flooding in the small wooded area. Even if dry tomorrow, children will not be able to use it.
The Year 6 classes have been having their final practice runs before the 'tests' proper take place next week.

Two More Routes

There will be 63 children traveling on ?buses? from the Harmers Hay area, the Anglesey Avenue region and also from Harebeating as from 24th May, by when the two new bus routes will be in full operation. Trial running of the routes began this morning.
No other school in the county has such a successful Walking Bus timetable in operation.

Mrs Cobb visited Telscombe Cliffs school during the morning.
This evening at 7pm there is a meeting for parents of Y5 children going on the Pyke House residential visit.

It rained all morning and for part of the afternoon.
Mr Stuart Warren, a trainee teacher from Brighton University, has begun his block teaching practice in Year 4 (Miss Jones's class).
