Victorian Day

Both Year 5 classes spent the entire day 'in role' as Victorian schoolchildren and teachers. It was a fantastic experience for all concerned. Pictures will be posted on the Hawk Talk website after the half-term holiday, which began at the end of the day. Photographs may appear in the Hailsham Gazette this coming Wednesday.

Sporting Champion

Olympic pole-vaulter, Nick Buckfield, visited the school yesterday to formally recognise the school's Activemark GOLD status. Years 2 - 6 were given a talk and Q&A session after which Nick gave Year 6 a special gymnastics workshop. The visit was co-ordinated by Miss Graves, the school's PE Leader. Bob Lake, the LEA Manager for PE, and Julie Jackson, PE Development Officer, were special guests.
Parents have already begun to arrive for the later of our two parent evenings. Judo and Brownies have moved into the junior hall so that the infant hall can still be used as a thoroughfare between KS1 classes.

Power Cut

The school was without electricity for over an hour at the end of the morning when the local area was subject to a power cut. Fortunately the kitchen's gas ovens were already fired up, so preparation of lunch was uninterrupted.
Parents arrived at school throughout the early evening to keep appointments made with teachers. There will be another, later, Parent Evening on Thursday.

Assemblies

Today's assemblies were taken by members of a local church's youth group.
J Jedamzik, a maths graduate currently training to be a secondary teacher at HCC, is spending part of this week with us on a primary placement. There was no staff meeting today, it being the week of parent evenings.

Gifted And Talented

Mrs Cobb was away attending a Gifted and Talented conference. Yesterday afternoon, as part of the Primary Leadership Programme, the senior management team, together with the numeracy co-ordinator, met for discussions about 'distributed leadership' and to plan the Inset Day on November 1st.

Rain Stopped Play

Heavy rain forced the cancellation of today's netball tournament just as teams were preparing for the first matches on our playground.
Rev. Tomalin led the school's Harvest Festivals in the morning, with KS2 children having offered donations to Christian Aid, and KS1 children having brought in either harvest goods or a Christian Aid offering. The harvest produce donated by the younger children was delivered to Grangemead, a home for the elderly, by a group of children just before lunch.
Parents of Y6 children were invited to the school at 6.30pm to hear about the format of the end of Key Stage 2 tests.

Waitrose Visit

Year 3 walked into town for a behind-the-scenes visit to Waitrose. Mrs Cobb was out during the first part of the day visiting Churchwood school.

Early Years Policy

Mrs C Wilson and Mrs S Holter spent the morning in school observing teaching support groups in KS1 and KS2. Mrs Holter is taking over from Mrs Wilson as the Governor with oversight of special needs.
At a staff meeting Mrs Gent presented a revised copy of the school's policy for Early Years. Other matters discussed included the wildlife area, and the Primary Leadership Programme.

Cup Winners

The Hawkes Farm Football team had seven wins out of seven when they competed in the area 6-a-side tournament, held at HCC yesterday.
Goals - Matthew H (8); Liam (4); Joe (4); Alex (1); Thomas C (1)

Mr Lowe was unable to accompany them as he had travelled to Leicestershire with a selected group of children as part of an email project undertaken in Y5. They left yesterday morning and return this evening.

There were two Governor Committee meetings this week - the Curriculum committee met on Wednsay 6th and the Finance and Staffing committee on Thursday 7th.

At last Monday's staff meeting, Mr Thorn and Miss Thomas went over network, intranet and website matters, and teachers were given a hands-on intorduction to the new Samsung cameras.

PlayLeaders

Mrs Jackson was in school during the afternoon to complete the training of playleaders and to explain their role to the rest of the school in assemblies. The PlayLeaders will take up their duties as from Monday October 4th.

The Senior Management Team were joined by Miss Hines, numeracy co-ordinator, and Sue Benson, facilitator, for their first full day of discussions as part of ther Primary Leadership Programme.
