We wish you all A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! 1 WELCOME & CONGRATULATIONS A special welcome to Mrs Gent who replaces Miss Travis as Team Leader at the Foundation Stage, and congratulations to Mr Seymour who got married during the Christmas break. 2 THANK YOU Thank you for the great support you gave to our Christmas celebrations. In the course of the three concerts and the carol service £340.58 was raised and passed to 'Concern' towards their work in supporting less fortunate children. Thanks and congratulations also to FOHF who raised a magnificent £2008 at their Christmas Bazaar. 3 LOST PROPERTY In spite of parading all children past the lost property collected at the end of term, very little of it was claimed - especially at Key Stage 2. We have an amazing number of unclaimed sweatshirts, all in excellent condition, so if you know your child has 'lost' one, please prompt them to look again. If only these items were named we'd be able to match them with an owner - so pleased check names are clearly written in all items of uniform. 4 THE PUPPETEERS The puppeteers are paying their annual visit on 27th January - this time to perform "The Happy Prince". Our link with the Puppeteers extends over more than fifteen years and is retained simply because of the high educational value of their performances. We ask you to contribute £1.40 per child - which is excellent value for money. Please send this in via your child no later than 23rd January. Visit www.puppco.demon.co.uk to find out more about the production, the story and the making of the puppets.
A small group of parents met last term to discuss the possibility of setting up an alternative means of getting to school safely through a "Walking Bus". Andrew Keer, Road Safety Officer will be talking to all KS2 pupils on 15th January and then will meet with interested parents at 3.30 pm to discuss how such a scheme can be set up. Do feel free to come, even if you were unable to attend the initial meeting. 6 OfSTED ACTION PLAN Following an inspection, all schools are required to produce an 'Action Plan'. You will find this attached to this letter. 7 DATA PROTECTION All schools are required to issue a statement, informing parents about the kind of data held and the use to which it may be put. The attached statement will I'm sure be familiar to you as it is very similar to one posted to you by the East Sussex IRT Project. 8 DATES FOR YOUR DIARY 9.1.04 FOHF Disco 13.1.04 FOHF Meeting 8.00 pm 15.1.04 "Walking Bus" meeting for all interested parents 3.30 pm 20.1.04 Open Morning for new parents 10.00 am 22.1.04 " " " " " " " " 23.1.04 Blue Peter Bring & Buy Sale 26.1.04 Open Morning for new parents 10.00 am 27.1.04 The Puppeteers present "The Happy Prince" 28.1.04 Open Morning for new parents 10.00 am 4.2.04 Governors AGM for parent 7.30 pm 13.2.04 Mufti Day " " School Closed for half-term break - 16th-20th February inclusive 3.3.04 Parent Evening 8.3.04 Science Week 10.3.04 Football Tournament 11.3.04 Parent Evening 17.3.04 "Hailsham Rotary Club Quiz" for schools 20.3.04 Concert presented by Years 3 & 4 2.4.04 Term ends 19.4.04 School re-opens SCHOOL TERMS AND HOLIDAYS 2004 - 2005 (nb - There will be no In Service days during Spring Term 2004) SPRING TERM – 2004 5th January, 2004 2nd April, 2004 Half-term Holiday 16th February, 2004 20th February, 2004 SUMMER TERM - 2004 19th April, 2004 21st July, 2004 May Day Holiday 3rd May, 2004 Half-term Holiday 31st May, 2004 4th June, 2004 AUTUMN TERM - 2004 1st September, 2004 In Service Day2nd September, 2004 21st December, 2004 Half-term Holiday 25th October, 2004 29th October, 2004 SPRING TERM – 2005 5th January, 2005 23rd March, 2005 Half-term Holiday 14th February, 2005 18th February, 2005 SUMMER TERM - 2005 11th April, 2005 22nd July, 2005 May Day Holiday 2nd May, 2005 Half-term Holiday 30th May, 2005 3rd June, 2005
Ofsted Action Plan Summary for parents. All parents will have received a copy of the summary of the report on the last Ofsted inspection. The full report is available on our website or hard copies from the office. Whilst the report contained no significant issues, the governing body is nonetheless required as a matter of course to produce an action plan showing how the school will respond to the three areas identified for further development. 1. Continue to develop the good work of subject co-ordinators by allocating time for them to observe the teaching of their subjects. In addition to the time already allocated for monitoring each subject by the coordinator, each subject will receive special focus over a half term period. During that time, coordinators will in addition to the other tasks within their remit, support & observe other teachers in their delivery of the curriculum. 2. Review the deployment of support staff in lessons to make sure that their expertise is used to maximum effect. During whole class teaching sessions, teachers and teaching assistants will agree which pupils are to be targeted for close-up attention, what form the support will take and any recording which might take place. 3. Plan the most effective use of the computer suite to ensure that pupils make good progress. Following revision of the timetable for using the ICT suite, teachers will decide the best way of teaching each section of the ICT curriculum ie. for some units of work the class may be taken as a whole, whilst for others the class will be divided into two halves with one half being taught in the suite, whilst the others continue to work under supervision in the classroom. Groups would then change over, ensuring that all children had equal access to the suite. DATA PROTECTION ACT Schools, local education authorities and the Department for Education and Skills (the government department which deals with education) all hold information on pupils in order to run the education system, and in doing so have to follow the Data Protection Act 1998. This means, among other things, that the data held about pupils must only be used for specific purposes allowed by law. We are therefore writing to tell you about the types of data held, why that data is held, and to whom it may be passed on. The school holds information on pupils in order to support their teaching and learning, to monitor and report on their progress, to provide appropriate pastoral care, and to assess how well the school as a whole is doing. This information includes contact details, National Curriculum assessment results, attendance information, characteristics such as ethnic group, special educational needs and any relevant medical information. From time to time we are required to pass on some of this data to the Local Education Authority (LEA), to another school to which the pupil is transferring, to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), and to Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) which is responsible for the National Curriculum and associated assessment arrangements. The Local Education Authority (LEA) uses information about pupils to carry out specific functions for which it is responsible. Information about individual pupils is used for:
The LEA also uses statistical information aggregated from individual pupil records to monitor pupil performance and progress, and to allocate funding to schools. Statistics are used in such a way that individual pupils cannot be identified. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority uses information about pupils to administer the National Curriculum tests and assessments for Key Stages 1 to 3. The results of these are passed on to DfES in order for it to compile statistics on trends and patterns in levels of achievement. The QCA uses the information to evaluate the effectiveness of the National Curriculum and the associated assessment arrangements, and to ensure that these are continually improved. The Department for Education and Skills uses information about pupils for statistical purposes, to evaluate and develop education policy and to monitor the performance of the education service as a whole. The statistics (including those based on information provided by the QCA) are used in such a way that individual pupils cannot be identified from them. The DfES will feed back to LEAs and schools information about their pupils where they are lacking this information because it was not passed on by a former school. On occasion information may be shared with other Government departments or agencies strictly for statistical or research purposes only. Pupils, as data subjects, have certain rights under the Data Protection Act, including a general right of access to personal data held on them, with parents exercising this right on their behalf if they are too young to do so themselves. If your child wishes to access the personal data, or you wish to do so on their behalf, then please contact the school or the appropriate organisation in writing. Contacts for other organisations are: · The LEA’s Data Protection Officer at PO Box 4, County Hall, St Anne’s Crescent, Lewes, BN7 1SG. · The QCA’s Data Protection Officer at QCA, 83 Piccadilly, LONDON, W1J 8QA. · The DfES’s Data Protection Officer at DfES, Caxton House, Tothill Street, LONDON, SW1H 9NA.
