NEWSLETTER March 2004

1 Walking Bus

Hailsham’s very first Walking Bus got underway on Monday 15th March with no fewer than eighteen children travelling in from the Anglesey area, escorted by a large team of volunteer helpers. We hope to see a second bus start up in another week’s time with others established after the Easter break, though obviously everything hinges upon the availability of volunteers. The Walking Bus provides a safe, fun and healthy way to get to school in the mornings – and – if we could accommodate all of the 70 children who’ve requested places, just think of the impact this would have in reducing the present traffic congestion. Many, many thanks to Caroline Wilson who has worked incredibly hard to get the project off the ground, and if you are able to help, even if it’s only one or two days a week, then do contact Caroline via the school.

2 Football

Congratulations to the boys’ football team who returned once again as champions from the local schools’ tournament. Not one goal scored against them throughout the afternoon! The girls’ team also did extremely well in their tournament, winning two and drawing two of their matches.

3 Well Done…

…to Miss Hines, Miss Jones, Mrs Stockdale, Mrs Axell and Mr Hind who abseiled down the side of the Congress Theatre and in so doing, raised over £500 for the RNIB.

4 Building Improvements

A successful bid for funds will enable us to get on and complete a new improved main entrance, with access and toilet provision for the disabled together with much needed expansion of the main office. Work will be carried out over the summer break.

5 Mufti Day

Postponed earlier in the term, Mufti Day will now be on Friday 26th March. The theme is “People at Work”, and children are invited to come dressed ready for work in their chosen trade or profession. A small contribution of 50p max. towards school fund would be much appreciated

6 Tesco Computer Tokens

Yes we are collecting these, and they are a great help to us in developing our computer resources. A collection point may be found just inside the front entrance.

7 School Closure

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED FOR INSET ON MONDAY 19th APRIL.

8 … and Finally …

… with just a very short time to go now before leaving Hawkes Farm, I would like to thank everyone within the school community for the enormous support I have had throughout the past twenty-one years. Over that time the school has changed dramatically, from some 230 pupils on roll to nearly twice that number and with similar changes to the building and grounds. What hasn’t changed however, is the commitment of everyone, staff and governors alike, and the desire to seek continual improvement in the opportunities the school offers its pupils. That I know will go on, ensuring that the school goes from strength to strength under the leadership of Mrs Cobb.
