2 ECO-WARRIORS
If you are interested in environmental issues you might like to join a new Eco-Team being set up at Hawkes Farm to look into ways of making our school more sustainable. Mrs van Dijkhuizen would like to have 2 or 3 parents on the team, which will probably meet once per term in school time. If you would like more information or to volunteer, please see Mrs van Dijkhuizen in Year 1 or leave a message at the school office.

3 SPORTS DAY
As you are all aware by now, the weather has been against us in being able to run our Sports Days on the designated dates. We have booked for Junior Sports Day to go ahead on Friday, 20th July.
The Infant Sports has been booked for the afternoon of Friday 13th July. I hope that both dates bring us good luck with the weather!

4 SWIMMING POOL
We have been in the unfortunate position of not having a Caretaker for the last few weeks. Mr Mike Proctor (our retired Caretaker) has now agreed to help us out while Mr Driver is off work. The running of the pool is done by the Caretaker who has completed the Health & Safety Training by the Local Authority. Mr Proctor is now able to get the pool up and running again. This may take a few days, so we will let you know when swimming will resume. Thank you to everyone for being so understanding during this unexpected, difficult time. Your support and offers of help have been much appreciated.

We will be looking at how we can improve the swimming pool area with the Governors and Friends of Hawkes Farm over the next few years. If you are interested in being part of this discussion you can either join the FoHF committee, or become a Parent Governor when the elections take place in the next academic year.

5 CHILDREN’S SCHOOL COUNCIL
I have included an article from the children’s School Council explaining about the mufti-event they are organising for Friday, 6th July. The School Council is lead by Mrs van Dijkhuizen. Together they have worked really hard this year in addressing issues and making some very positive changes. I hope that a report from them will be included as a regular item in or our newsletters in the future.

“Dear Parents / Carers
We are having an ADVENTURE PICNIC for the WHOLE SCHOOL on FRIDAY, 6th JULY to raise money for a new piece of equipment in our Adventure Playground. Please could every child bring 50p in exchange for having a picnic. You will need a snack and a drink (but no fizzy drinks or glass bottles please.) You can wear MUFTI on this day. Each class will decide what they want to do at the picnic and how they will organise their hour. Some want to make it a Teddy Bears’ picnic so you may bring a teddy. Thank you - The School Council”

5 THANK YOU
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support and help this year:

• Thank you to all the staff and governors for sharing their ideas and making things happen to benefit all the children, particularly the extras – the clubs, trips, extra class sessions, collecting evidence for awards to celebrate our achievements.
• Thank you to the Friends of Hawkes Farm Committee and the band of volunteers for the fantastic fundraising events that have taken place this year. This benefits the school in resourcing areas such as ICT, wildlife area and play equipment which then benefits all the children in the school. We are so fortunate to have a such a well resourced school.
• Thank you to all the volunteers, parents, grandparents and friends of the school who come in and given up their time to support us in so many activities. These range from helping with in-class activities, reading clubs, school trips, sports days, theme weeks, Year 3 Christmas activities and many more. We can only offer so much because of the great support we receive from all our volunteers.
And not forgetting …..
• A thank you to the children. We are always proud of how much effort they put into their work and the high standards of behaviour and respect they show each other. The Year 6 Playleaders and monitors do a fantastic job supporting all children in the school. The School Council have a voice in the school and make positive changes to benefit all.

I hope to see you at the Sports Days this term, weather permitting!

I wish you all a happy and restful summer holiday.

Yours sincerely

Mrs V Cobb
Headteacher

7 FoHF NEWS - July, 2007
- Our official opening of the wildlife area took place early June and although the newspapers were there to record the event, for some reason we were not publicised. Children from of all year groups took part and enjoyed an hour within the area before returning to class.
- We do hope that those of you who came to our Summer Fete enjoyed the event despite the inclement weather! Thank you to all contributors and those who supported us and provided our ring entertainment: Paul Leaney’s Judo Club; East Sussex Music Service: Stevenson’s Cello Joggers; and Zoë Pennington’s Dance Academy. In addition, thanks are expressed to St John’s Ambulance Service and East Sussex Fire Brigade for their attendance at our event.
Mufti day: Thank you for your wonderful contributions. We ended up with 4 tombolas, which were brilliant fund raisers!
Bill & Ben flower pot competition: Some wonderful creative entries - Mrs Cobb had a difficult time judging them all! Congratulations to Matthew Sheppard (1st) for his brilliant Dalek construction! 2nd, 3rd and 4th places went to Kirsten Bryant, Holly Riggs and Tanya Izon. Well done to you all!
Funds raised this term: Second Hand Clothing Sale: £26
Summer Fete: £4,200!
Donations to the school: It was with great pleasure that the Friends were able to present a cheque of £13,000 to the school at the Summer Fete to be used for ICT. £3,000 of this is to cover the cost and installation of the interactive projector that has been installed in the Infant Hall.
Events coming up soon: Our tuck shop for Sports Day will be on, date subject to weather and school!
2007 Annual General Meeting – Thursday 20th September – 7.30pm in the Infant Hall at School - it only lasts an hour! Anyone who is interested in where or how funds are raised for the school is invited. This includes, friends, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and guardians of current or past pupils attending the school. If you are unable to attend, ask someone else to represent you in your absence. You could have a big say in where the funds we raise throughout the year go. At the end of the day, without volunteers, the extras that you may take for granted around the school will not be there! All are welcome to come to this meeting, and we would love to see you!
- Thank you for the support you have given the Friends during the school year. I hope that you all have a very happy and enjoyable summer.
Melanie J Izon - Chairperson
