School's
2-Day Closure
After
being forced to close on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th January because
of blocked drains, the school re-opened on Thursday 10th.
However, (as explained in Mrs Cobb's letter) we have been advised
that although the drains have been cleared there is still a fault
(at the point where the school's drains join the main sewers) that
will require further attention and in the meantime may give rise
to a repeat of the problems experienced this week. East Sussex are
in touch with Southern Water to see when the work to permanently
repair this fault will be carried out.

Book Award
Hawkes
Farm hosted the presentations of the 2007 East Sussex Schools
Book Award on Wednesday 20th June. The event was attended
by six schools. The winning author, Rick Riordan, was unable to
receive the award in person as he is American. But a message from
the author was displayed:
Reading groups from participating schools had been reading the five
shortlisted titles for several months before voting for their favourite
book. Here is the Hawkes Farm Book Group holding up copies of all
the shortlisted titles. Michael Morpurgo's Adolphus Tips
came second.
Arts Week
The
school enjoyed an exciting week of multicultural arts activitites
from 11th - 15th June which included dance workshops, music workshops
and drama workshops in a programme devised and organised by Mrs
Harley, MIss Graves, Miss Porter and Mrs Stockdale. Instead of regular
Good Work assemblies, each class shared their experiences with the
rest of the school by giving a short presentation.

done to both yeargroups. In
The Nets

The
new sports wall and nets saw a day of action on Friday 24th March,
with PE co-ordinator, Miss Graves, leading a number of classes in
activities using the lane feature provided by the netting. On hand
was Mr T Tapp, instrumental in the fundraising for the 'wall' and
in its installation.
Still
Winning!
The
school netball team won the local netball tournament held at Hawkes
Farm on Wednesday 22nd March. The school now holds both the netball
and the football cup concurrently (see below).
Keep On Winning!
The
school football team won the local tournament on Wednesday 15th
March to keep the cup. We have retained the football trophy so consistently
in recent seasons, it's becoming hard to remember the last time
Hawkes Farm didn't win this event!
Kabubbu
Visit

On the last day of term a group of children from the Kabubbu School
in Uganda visited. After performing some of their songs they socialised
with Years 5 & 6 and joined the rest of the school for lunch.
The Quicken Trust,
a local charity which supports the education of these African children,
was presented with a cheque made up of donations received at the
school's Christmas concerts and carol service.

Christmas
Fair
The
first major event organised by Melanie Izon and the new committee
of the Friends of Hawkes Farm was a resounding success.
Christmas Fair takings exceeded £2000, with final funds raised
(after expenses) expected to be not much under that figure. The
fair was opened by the Town Mayor (delegating for MP Charles Hendry,
who was suffering with scarlet fever). Just before 2pm the queue
stretched into Hawks Road and took over 40 minutes to pass through
the entrance.

Skipping
Workshop

On Wednesday 9th November selected playleaders from Y6 received
skipping training in the afternoon and then gave Y2 - Y5 a demonstration
of techniques that could be used in the playground.
There was a further skipping workshop after school. Skipping ropes,
priced £3.95, will be available from the school office for
the next two weeks. Children's names should be taped to the plastic
handles.
Blue Peter
Badges

This group of children recently received individual green Blue Peter
badges in recognition of the website they designed while in Year
2.
Go
here, to find out about Blue Peter's latest appeal:
They are asking children to collect unwanted mobile phones and coins
for the Blue Peter Treasure Trail Appeal. By recycling these coins
and mobile phones, you can raise money to help Childline answer
even more phone calls from children who really need to talk to someone.
Thomas (Y4) now has both a blue and a green badge!

Particularly
Successful
Hawkes
Farm has been identified by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector
of Schools (OfSTED) in his 2003/2004 Annual Report as an extremely
effective school. The report gives special praise for fewer than
10% of schools inspected during 2003/4. Hawkes Farm was the only
East Sussex school commended as 'particularly successful'.
